Food has a heavy impact and a direct influence on our brain function and workplace performance. If you are feeling relatively tired or unproductive at work, it could be due to what you are eating. Let’s take a look at a list of 5 nutritious options that will boost your work performance.

1. Apples – The quote eating an apple a day keeps the doctor away isn’t around for no reasons. Apples provide fructose for energy along with fast-acting sucrose for a burst of energy. So instead of looking for a caffeine boost, try an apple next time. The skin of the apples is also known to contain antioxidants that help protect the body from diseases.

2. Berries – Low fat, free of saturated fats, high levels of fiber, vitamin C and extremely delicious – berries are the perfect way to start your day. Not only do they improve you blood flow, they are also extremely helpful with increasing your memory. Berries are also famous for preventing Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s in the future and production of new brain cells.

3. Bananas – Our mood and brain functions are easily boosted through the various chemicals in bananas. With high magnesium, potassium, and high doses of natural sugars (fructose), bananas are both delicious and great for your brain and body. The natural sugars are digested a lot slower than refined sugars giving you long doses of energy throughout your day.

4. Carrots – Carrots reduce your blood sugar levels steadily instead of the spikes and crashes that come with an early morning donut or brownie. They also have a low glycemic index meaning that the glucose is broken down slowly throughout the day helping you keep focus on your tasks as your day progresses. Carrots can also be enjoyed with a nice hummus dip making them both delicious and healthy.

5. Broccoli – There’s a reason to why broccoli is called a superfood; not only is it filled with an enormous amount of nutrients, it also has a huge dose of vitamin K and Choline. Vitamin K is great for supporting your cognitive function and brain power thus improving your productivity and focus during your day. Choline has been found to improve memory and plenty of tests have found that people who eat plenty of broccoli perform better on memory tests.

Maintain a healthy body weight with these tips

05 Mar 2019

Dieting or eating less isn’t always the answer to maintaining a healthy body weight. This is due to the fact that these temporary eating patterns only bring about temporary results and most dieters gain their lost weight when they go back to their old habits. If instead of eating less, switch to eating healthier and begin following a routine making maintaining a healthy body a piece of cake. Maintenance is all about sustainability and following a realistic plan. Here are some tips to follow for easy weight maintenance.

Exercise regularly – Obviously easier said than done but there are various ways to exercise without it feeling like a chore and by making it fun! You can start by doing the little things such as walking the dog, cycling to work, playing a sport you enjoy, doing classes such as yoga with friends. Exercising will not only look better, it will also make you feel better!

Don’t skip breakfast – Breakfast is crucial as it kick starts your metabolism, burning calories from the beginning of the day and giving you more energy to start your day off. It is a known fact that people who skip breakfast tend to have higher BMIs than people who eat breakfast. Skipping breakfast will leave you hungry for the rest of the day, tempting you to snack on high-calorie foods resulting in weight gain.

Eat 5 servings of fruits and veggies a day – Fruits and vegetables are a great and delicious way to fill up your diet instead of the unhealthy snacks. They are also packed with fibers and great nutrients which help your mind throughout the day and in the long-run. Vegetables are low in calories and thus have a minimal impact on your total calorie consumption allowing you to eat a lot without gaining much weight.

Drink water instead of sugary drinks – Water has several reasons for being helpful for weight maintenance. It promotes fullness as it is a natural appetite suppressant and helps a lot with your metabolism. A side note would be drinking water before meals as studies have shown that those who drink water before meals had a 13% reduction in calorie intake compared to participants that didn’t. Water also helps flush waste from the body which is important for fat metabolism and weight loss. Drinking more water increases the body’s resting energy expenditure, in other words more calories are being burnt while you are sleeping.

Eat healthy – Human weight loss = 80% Nutrition + 20% exercise. Working out won’t work if your diet is unhealthy as your food intake contributes to most of your weight. You shouldn’t be eating less but you should be eating healthier. By cutting down on the sugary snacks and high calorie foods and replacing them with healthier options, your calorie intake will drastically drop and the results will surely show. Your mental health will also improve in the process as healthy food helps with your function and productivity.

Get on the move and make it a habit!

Exercising regularly has many health benefits, both physically and mentally. Exercising can help with your skin, weight loss, decreasing your chances of chronic diseases and even improve your sex life. This article will share a list of reasons to why everyone should work out regularly.

The first and most important reasons is that it makes you happy. Exercise is proven to improve your mood and decrease feelings of depression, anxiety and stress. Regular exercising increases the production of endorphins which generate positive emotions and reduce the perception of pain.

Better sex life – Exercising often is a great way to improve your sex life. By constantly strengthening your cardiovascular system, improving blood circulation, improving flexibility and keeping your muscles toned, exercising helps maintain and improve a strong, frequent sex life. A study on men found that a reduction of erectile dysfunction symptoms by 71% can be accomplished by just walking around the house for 6-minutes a day. Another study stated that people who reported more exercise hours per week had higher sexual function scores.

Brain health, memory, and diseases prevention – Exercising has been shown to grow the hippocampus in size. The hippocampus is the part of the brain that is vital for learning and memory and thus helps mental functions on older adults. This leads to also that exercise reduces alterations in the brain that can cause Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia. Moreover, exercising often decreases blood pressure and blood fat levels which help prevent a lot of diseases as you grow older such as type 2 diabetes, heart diseases, and early death.

It is great for your muscles and bones – As people age they tend to lose muscle mass and function which leads to more injuries and disabilities. Exercising regularly will help maintain your muscles strength as you age and will reduce your muscle loss. Your bone density will also improve your bone density helping prevent developing diseases such as osteoporosis later on in life.

Skin health – Exercise stimulates blood flow and helps delay the appearance of skin aging. Regular exercising helps increase your production of natural antioxidants which protect your cells.
